If you completed your exams through a school, college, or online learning provider, you’ll most likely get your results by email or through an online student portal. If you entered as a private candidate, the exam centre will let you know how your results will be sent. That might be by email, or you could be asked to log into an exam board’s results site.
Most results come out around 8am. If yours aren’t there straight away, don’t panic. Delays can happen. Have your candidate number ready and check all areas of your email inbox, including junk or spam folders.
If your resits took place in summer, you’ll get your results on Thursday 21st August 2025, the same day as all other GCSE results. If you sat your exams in the November series, especially for English or maths, your results will come out in January 2026.
Didn’t get the result you were hoping for?
If the grades you received weren’t quite what you were aiming for, it’s okay to feel disappointed. But it’s not the end of the story.
Speak to someone who knows your goals. This might be a tutor, a teacher, or a careers adviser. If your result was just a few marks off what you needed, your college or university might still accept you. They could even suggest another course or pathway that still gets you where you want to go.
If you decide to have another go, English and maths retakes are available in November and again in the summer. Many students do better the second or third time around, especially with a bit more support and a new revision plan.
And if you think something’s gone wrong with the marking, you can ask for a review. Just be quick, as there’s usually a short window to apply.
Where can GCSEs take you?
GCSEs are an important qualification for many routes forward. Whether you’re looking at sixth form, college, an apprenticeship or heading into work, most places will ask for a pass in English and maths. Universities often require them too.
Even if your grades aren’t exactly where you hoped, the fact that you’ve taken your GCSEs again shows determination. That matters. Employers and course providers see that as a strong sign you’re willing to work hard and keep improving.

If you’re not planning on resitting again, there are still other ways to meet the entry requirements for work or study.
Functional Skills qualifications are a good alternative. They focus on practical maths and English skills that you’ll use in everyday life. These qualifications are accepted by most employers, apprenticeship providers, and even some universities. Pass Functional Skills offers online courses and exams, and you can even take them from home, which is handy if you’ve got a lot going on.
Another useful route is GCSE equivalency testing. This is popular with people going into teaching, nursing, or other fields where you need to show GCSE-level ability without doing the full GCSE course again. A Star Equivalency provides maths, English and science exams that are widely recognised. They also give you support to help you prepare properly.
