GCSE exams have been cancelled this summer, 2021 and the government have put in place teacher assessed grades for those who attend a school or college. GCSE grades are crucial for many things such as A levels, employment and Universities. If you don’t attend a school or a college then there is an uncertainty on how you will receive a teacher assessed grades. This page should help you understand teacher assessed grades and alternative qualifications that are accepted by Universities and employers.
Teacher assessed grades for those in schools and colleges
The ongoing work and mock exams are still important so carry on with the hard work you are doing. You can help support your teacher assessed grade with external controlled assessments that will be submitted to your school or college. The controlled assessments for GCSE maths exams that MME offers are like mock exams and the results will be submitted as more evidence to help with your grade.
GCSE Exams and GCSE resits
Some of the exams are cancelled but the exams that are still going ahead are the iGCSE qualifications and the GCSE 2021 resit exams. You can call MME on 020 3633 5145 to book as an external candidate to sit this exam. The GCSE maths retake page will provide more information about the November GCSE resit exams.
Teacher assessed grades for external candidates
If you are an external candidate and not in mainstream education, then you won’t receive a teacher assessed grade by a college or school. MME and GCSE examiners have worked hard to provide you with a series of assessments that will provide you a grade. The GCSE maths controlled assessments can be booked via the dedicated page.
Alternatives to GCSE exams and teacher assessed grades
Apart from the GCSE exams, there are other qualifications that are accepted by Universities and employers. The phrase ‘Give your GCSE or GCSE equivalent qualifications‘ is commonly used when applying for University and jobs. An alternative name that is used instead of GCSE equivalent qualifications is functional skills. A level 2 functional skills qualification is a GCSE equivalent grade C/level 4. The links below will explain functional skills:

Nurses and Trainee Teachers
Teacher training and nursing courses normally prefer GCSE equivalency tests over functional skills. The GCSE equivalency test is accepted by most Universities and employers, but you should ask the course provider or employer before you go ahead and book the exam. This qualification is also preferred over functional skills by training providers and SCITT’s.
